In Good Taste...Sampling the Cookbook Collection
The cookbook collection began with a generous donation in 1965 by Madison resident Mortimer Levitan as a memorial to his mother. This initial donation included 2615 titles. Today, the cookbook collection continues to grow and focuses upon culinary history, trends, and regional and world cuisines.
Should you wish to sample the cookbook collection, it can be found in the first floor book stacks, TX call-number range. Bon appetit!

Around the World Exhibition, College Library
On Wednesday, November 15, Room 1193 (7:00-8:00 PM), several of the student photographers will discuss their adventures and share additional images.
In addition to the "Around the World" exhibition, College Library is also hosting a selection of undergraduate art photography in the Illumination Gallery, Room 1250 (first floor of the library). Both of these photography exhibitions will continue through January 2007.

Bucky Reads!
UW-Madison Libraries, in cooperation with the Wisconsin Center for the Book, have created posters and bookmarks to promote reading within the Madison campus and community. (The poster even traveled to Washington DC for distribution to attendees of the National Book Festival).
The Athletic Department and its team players will also take the poster to area elementary schools to share some “Bookin it with Bucky” reading time.
Collect a bookmark from campus libraries or request posters by placing a request at bucky@library.wisc.edu.

Find Information about Journals & Magazines
From the E-Resources/Article Databases gateway, find Ulrich’s by name.
Search Ulrich's for a journal or magazine by title.
Click title link to view a detailed record.
The Basic Description Tab supplies information about the journal or magazine including publisher, frequency of issue, language of text, and refereed (or peer-reviewed) status.
The link to “Table of Contents” supplies the table of contents to a range of volumes. (You can even run a simple topic search there within the contents of that journal).
The Abstracting/Indexing tab will list databases that can be searched for the contents of the particular journal or magazine. Speak with a librarian or run a database name search in the E-Resource/Article databases gateway to see whether campus libraries have access to the database.
Find It with Google Scholar
If you are using Google Scholar from off-campus, select Scholar Preferences from the Google Scholar search page, and type the name of your library in the Library Links section. (Note: A simple search here for Wisconsin will supply you with several UW library choices--select University of Wisconsin-Madison). Click Save Preferences in order to generate an active Find It at UW Madison link.

NCBI Mini-Courses, July 25-26, 2006
Each course is slated for 2.5 hours with the first 1.5 hours devoted to an overview, the remaining time for hands-on exploration. Overview lectures will be held in room 1335; hands-on sessions will be held in room 2121--both in the Health Sciences Learning Center.
Participation is free but pre-registration is required.

Playing House: Homemaking for Children, UW Digital Collections

Homemaking, instructional manuals were not only written for the adult domestic goddess but also to engage children (more specifically, girls) in the joys of cooking, mending, and tidying up. This new collection features digitized, cover-to-cover editions of several titles spanning the late 1800s to the 1930s.
Additional texts devoted to this interesting slice of history, education and culture can be found in campus library collections. Speak with Steenbock librarians for assistance with searching the MadCat catalog should you like to find others.

QuickSet Searching (E-Resource Gateway)
Select “QuickSearch for Articles” from the Libraries’ Web site.
Eighteen subsets have been created. Select a subset and enter search terms into the search boxes above the subset menu. Your retrieval will reveal how many records have been retrieved by each database.
(Note: Click on the heading of each subset to see a list of databases that will be searched).
Tips: Depending upon your topic, you may wish to try your search in more than one QuickSearch subset.
You may find that specific databases will be more productive. In order to conduct additional and more powerful searches, select that specific database separately, by name, from the E-Resource Gateway, Find Resources page.

Browsing the Stacks, Online
Run a MadCat search for a topic (or specific title) of interest. From that item’s record, copy the call number.
Choose to run a search by "Call Number Browse" from MadCat’s basic search interface. Enter the call number into the search box and click search. You will be presented with other titles within that call number range.
Clicking on a title will display a detailed record from which you can confirm location and availability.

Book Retrieval-- at your Convenience with MadCat
Once you have logged in with your campus ID number and last name, select “retrieve from shelf.” On the following screen, you will be prompted to select a library pick-up location and to enter your ID number once more.
Please allow 1-3 days for items to reach their destination. You may check the status of your request by logging in to “My MadCat Account.” An email message will be sent when your items are available for pick-up.
Note: As Steenbock Library’s first floor is closed for remodeling, the book-retrieval request will enable us to have the books you need ready at the Circulation Desk.
