CALS Week Food Drive (Apr 20-25)

The CALS Student Association will be running a food drive during CALS Week, April 20-25, 2014.  Look for designated collection spaces in Ag Hall, Animal Sciences, Biochemistry and Steenbock Library.  All items collected will be donated to the Second Harvest Foodbank of Southern Wisconsin.  Please consult the poster at drop-sites for a list of suggested food and non-food items.

School Supply Drive

Pencils, glue and notebooks!  UW-Madison Day at the State Fair will be an opportunity to donate school supplies to Milwaukee-area students. By bringing a new school supply item to a Fair admissions gate, you will receive $4 off adult admission until 4:00 PM.  

If you are unable to visit the State Fair during UW-Madison Day (August 7), please do consider making a donation.  Drop-off a new, unopened school supply item in the donation box at Steenbock Library (second floor entrance-level) before August 7.  We will make sure these items make the trip to the fair collection site.  See the list of necessary school supplies.

UW Libraries' Blood Drive (March 5)

The Libraries invite eligible donors to stop by Memorial Library, Room 116 (from 9:00 AM until 3:00 PM) on Tuesday, March 5 to donate a pint through the American Red Cross.  This second annual blood drive is held in memory of a late staff member for whom this form of giving was near and dear.

Donors will be asked to present a blood donor card, driver’s license or two other forms of ID to check-in.

Letters to Santa

Write a letter to Santa to benefit the Make-a-Wish Foundation! Daily, and until December 23rd, members from the UW Wishmakers organization will stop by its Steenbock letter-writing station to collect letters.

For each letter written, Macy’s department stores will donate $1.00 to the Make-a-Wish Foundation.

The Make-A-Wish Foundation grants the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions; the UW-Wishmakers is a student branch of this organization.

Demonstrate your Knit Wit

Libraries are as much places for building community and fostering creativity as for pursuing quiet study and reflection.  Join us for both when Steenbock Library hosts its 'production socials', Fridays, November 2-December 14, from noon until 1:00 PM.  During these socials, we will produce 7"x9" squares to be stitched together into blankets to be donated to recipients identified by Warm-Up America.

Bring your lunch and join us in Room 240 (Steenbock Library).  Our entire community of library-users is welcome. Should you not know how to knit or crochet, never fear!  We have staff available to teach you a basic stitch suitable for the project.

Then, head to the stacks.  Should you be looking for some additional, creative inspiration, consider a short skein of titles from the Steenbock collection.

Exercise your Craftivism!

Knit (or crochet!) for a cause when Steenbock Library hosts a 'production social', Fridays, November 2-December 14, from noon until 1:00 PM.  During these socials, we will produce 7"x9" squares to be stitched together into blankets to be donated to recipients identified by Warm-Up America.

Bring your lunch and join us in Room 240 (Steenbock Library).  All students, staff and our community of library-users are welcome. Should you not know how to knit or crochet, never fear!  We have staff available to teach you a basic stitch suitable for the project.

The library has received yarn donations, hooks and needles from local knitting retailers and staff, but additional donations are also accepted!  We are asking for worsted or bulky weight yarn suitable for a blanket.  Acrylic, cotton or wool--we can work with it all!  Any donations that are not used for the blankets will be saved and used for other library-hosted knitting events and projects.  If you would like to donate yarn or blanket squares, please contact Ariel N.  The library will be accepting donations through mid-December and blanket squares through finals week.  Donations can be dropped off at Steenbock or Chemistry Libraries. 

When: Fridays, November 2 until December 14; noon-1:00 PM.

Where:  Room 240, Conference Room (second floor, entrance level).
The room will be open from 11:30 until 1:30 should your schedule require some variation.

Get Spooked for a Good Cause

October is here and Halloween is just around the corner. What better way to celebrate this ghoulish time of year than visiting a haunted house?  And better still, what if having a bit of Halloween fun can help others?

As advertised on eCALS, this year's annual UW Saddle and Sirloin Haunted House is a great way to enjoy an exciting Halloween adventure while supporting a good cause!  On October 18th and 19th from 7 - 10 p.m., the Old Horse Barn on 520 Elm Drive will be transformed into a
haunted house.  Admission is $1 or a non-perishable food item, and all
admission fares will be donated to the Second Harvest Food Bank of
Southern Wisconsin.  Lights-on hours will be 7-8 p.m. for children (and
perhaps nervous grownups), and then from 8 p.m. until 10 p.m. the lights
will go out and the hardcore haunting will begin!

So, if you look forward to a good hair-raising haunting at Halloween and
you want to help a good cause, be daring...your spooktacular experience
awaits at the the UW Saddle & Sirloin Haunted House.

UW-Madison Day at the State Fair (Aug 8)

Save the date! Come celebrate UW-Madison’s history of service and outreach by visiting its Wisconsin State Fair event, August 8. Located on the fair ground’s Central Mall, the "UW-Madison Day" will feature staff and alumni demonstrating their expertise and inviting fairgoers to "jump around" and experience all that the university has to offer--be that to taste some Babcock Ice Cream or to witness the Wonders of Physics.

Be sure to look for your Steenbock librarians and their campus library colleagues! We will be on hand to distribute some library-themed fun and to answer your questions about how you may visit and access library resources.

The State Fair event will also be an opportunity to donate school supplies to Milwaukee-area students. By bringing a new school supply to the Fair admissions gate, you will receive a voucher toward $5 off a $15 ticket sheet for SpinCity, the State Fair’s new amusement ride and game area (while supplies last).  See the list of necessary school supplies.

If you are unable to visit the State Fair during UW-Madison Day, please do consider making a school supply donation.  Donation boxes can be found at sites across campus--including Steenbock Library and Ag Hall.

Bike the Barns, 2012

Benefit the Partner Shares program (FairShare/MACSAC) with a challenging, yet picturesque ride to local farms in the Verona, Cross Plains and Blue Mounds communities. 

The Sixth Annual Bike the Barns event is scheduled for Sunday, September 16.  Register soon as there is limited capacity!  At each farm stop, enjoy delicious treats provided by the Underground Food Collective.

Canine Campus Crawl (April 22)

The UW Pre-Vet Club hosts its annual Canine Campus Crawl on Sunday, April 22 (9:30 AM –). This dog-friendly, 2.5 mile run/walk serves as a fundraiser for the Dane County Humane Society and the club. The run/walk departs from Lot 60.

Participants should register by April 12 to enjoy a discount. This pre-registration fee is $15 for one person (no dogs) or $20 for one person (up to two dogs). Registration fees for the day of the event are $20 for one person (no dogs) or $25 for one person (up to two dogs).

An additional $1 donation gets you a photo shoot with your dog!

In memory of this colleague, Maureen Grant, the libraries will host a blood drive--a cause that was near and dear to her. Now, through December 1, students and staff are invited to donate non-perishable food items on behalf of the "Share Your Holidays" end-hunger campaign. This effort, as coordinated by NBC 15, the campus Office of Visitor & Information Programs and campus partners, including University Housing and the General Library System, supplies necessary food items for the Second Harvest Foodbank of Southern Wisconsin.

Current campus donation sites include the following:

• Union South, 1308 W. Dayton Street

• Office of the Registrar, 333 East Campus Mall, Room 10101

• WSUM 91.7 FM, 333 East Campus Mall, Room 4100

Those who wish to make a monetary donation can do so through the Second Harvest site and can have that donation credited to UW-Madison or to the specific department or unit helping to raise donations.
