Undergraduate, Library Research Awards

College Library, in conjunction with the Undergraduate Symposium, invites students to apply for its annual Undergraduate Library Research Awards. The awards celebrate excellence and creativity in using the library to complete an undergraduate research project. (Examples may include a literature review for a lab study, the use of primary sources in a historical research paper, or the background research for a creative arts project).

Up to three Library Research Awards and one Research in Progress Award will be presented at the Undergraduate Symposium. (The Research in Progress Award is intended for projects that will not be completed before the award deadline). Winners of Library Research Awards receive a cash prize of $300. The winner of the Research in Progress Award receives a cash prize of $150.

(Please note: The Financial Aid Office may need to modify your aid package if you were to receive outside aid, such as this cash prize).

The deadline to apply for the 2013 library research awards will be April 5, 2013.

How to Apply--the process:

1. Meet with Kelli Keclik at College Library or with Jessica Newman at Steenbock Library OR attend a drop-in information session to review and discuss your research.

2. Reflect on the various tools and strategies used to locate relevant materials.

3. Review the sample essay and then write a 600-800 word essay describing your research experience, noting the successes, difficulties, and surprises you encountered.

4. Submit an application, a statement of faculty support, a final version of your project, and the essay.

Drop-in information sessions will be offered at College and Steenbock Libraries during the following days/times:

• Tuesday, April 2, 5:00-6:00 PM, College Library, 1st floor center

Spring Break, 2013

As library staff wish you a terrific spring break, be sure to check out the UHS site, "Do Spring Break Right" with tips on how to exercise a good time responsibly, no matter how far away you venture.

And, should you still need to work on a paper or project (thinking of that responsible behavior!), do note, with our off-campus access service, you are never far away from the campus library resources you know and love.

Campus libraries will be open during the break but with shorter hours. Confirm hours of operation by visiting the list of library locations and note the "Who’s Open" tab.

Pi Day, 3.14

Mathematicians, among others, observe Pi Day due to Pi being 3.14 (or extended as, 3.1415926535...) or otherwise, as March 14. While you could commemorate the occasion with some clever calculations, I suggest another formula. Check out some "pie" from Steenbock’s cookbook collection!

CSA Open House (March 10)

Meet your farmers!  The FairShare CSA Coalition will host its annual open house at the Monona Terrace, Sunday March 10, from 1:00-4:00 PM.

At the open house, you will be able to chat with farmers and evaluate the different share options--often weekly or every-other-week deliveries of seasonal produce, eggs, cheese, honey or meat depending upon share plan and CSA farm. (And, many of these same folks participate in the area farmers’ markets).

In order to plan ahead, take a look at the Farm List to consider farms and share options that will best satisfy your appetite for produce and level of participation. Many of the farms have application forms that you can submit now.

In addition to supporting a local economy and savoring the fresh produce, there are some other incentives. Many health plans furnish rebates for CSA participation. Shares can also be donated to assist families in our community in need. And, less we forget, there are opportunities to volunteer and to learn more with a job or internship at an area farm or FairShare event.

On Wisconsin, On Film (March 6)

The University Archives (housed at Steenbock) has a collection of more than 3500 historic films that capture the life and times of UW-Madison’s students and staff.  As part of the Friends of the Libraries series celebrating treasures from the collections, you can enjoy a free screening of clips from films of the 1930s through the 1970s.  In addition to the screening, University Archivists David Null and Vicki Tobias will be on-hand to share anecdotes and to moderate discussion.   
The screening and discussion will take place in the Memorial Library Commons, Room 460; refreshments will be provided.
