Ramp Construction and Parking Alternatives

Work began on June 1 to expand capacity of the Lot 36/Steenbock parking ramp.

Metered parking there is currently unavailable with the lot closing completely from June 16 until approximately July 4; limited access will then commence for lower levels beginning July 7.

Should you require a metered space for short-term parking, meters are available in area Lots 32, 34, 35 and 43. Consult a campus map. Visit the visitor parking options site for descriptions of these lots by location.

Additional construction events information can be found on the Transportation Services site with a listing of Lot alternatives for permit holders.

Library Liaisons

Have you met your liaison? Summer is a good time to get acquainted. A Steenbock liaison works as a principal contact for each department and program the library serves.

Library liaisons can provide the following services:

  • Assist with library services and policies (e.g., Library Express, faculty runner cards, UW System search and retrieval…),

  • Customize email alerts to keep you informed about new articles matching your topic criteria and tables of contents of your favorite journals,

  • Provide in-depth reference consultations—our office or yours--(e.g., help with strategy and database choices, customize your own alerts…),

  • Supply customized instructional sessions and course web pages for students (e.g, hands-on training in using specific databases in your subject area, cited reference searching, evaluating websites),

  • Verify citations,

  • Assist with purchase requests or recommendations,

  • Consult on questions related to publishing your research (e.g., identifying target journals, managing copyright, measuring research impact, open access publishing),

  • Provide in-depth orientation for new faculty, staff, graduate students, and project and research assistants.

Dairy Month

June has long been designated Dairy Month. In order to savor the bounty from dairy producers, the Wisconsin Milk Marketing Board has posted a calendar of events at its site, statistics, and a request form for its free Traveler’s Guide, Cheese Map!

If you are interested, though, in history and status of the dairy industry, there are a variety of resources available, including the following listed below, that supply more comprehensive treatment.

The Centennial issue of Journal of Dairy Science (April 2006) features a selection of the “Major Advances in Dairy Science in the Last Twenty-Five Years”

(Full-text to this volume can be accessed by running a journal title search using the Find It form).

The Rise of Dairy Farming, Turning Points in Wisconsin History, Wisconsin Historical Society

Rethinking Dairyland (leaflets and discussion papers), Agricultural & Applied Economics

Status of Wisconsin Agriculture (annual outlook reports), Agricultural & Applied Economics

Retain Access to Your Citations (RefWorks)

UW-Madison provides access to RefWorks for all campus users. If you are leaving this campus there are several ways you can retain access to your citations.

If you will continue to use RefWorks at another institution or through a personal subscription you should use the Backup/Restore feature of RefWorks.

First, backup your citations in your current RefWorks account.

Then, open your future RefWorks account, when available, and restore your backup citations.

Note: Your RefWorks account should be empty when using the Restore command. Restoring will overwrite all of the references in your database. When restoring, do so in an empty database or to an account that does not have any data you want to save.

If you will not continue to have access to RefWorks or will be switching to another citation manager such as EndNote, Reference Manager, or other, then you should use the Export feature of RefWorks.

Export your citations from your current RefWorks account.

Select Bibliographic Software (EndNote, Reference Manager, ProCite)

Citations will not be saved in folders but in one merged file unless you export each folder separately.

Follow your specific software directions to Import these citations.
