A is for Audience; B is for Buzz; C is for Cinema. The annual Wisconsin Film Festival, April 18-22, brings Madison audiences some of the finest examples of independent, local and international film-making. Advance tickets will go on sale beginning March 31 (online or at the Festival Box Office, Memorial Union) and running until April 17. After this date, online ticketing will no longer be available but tickets to some shows may be purchased at each theater for films playing at those respective locations. Festival venues--campus, public and independently-owned theaters in the heart of Madison--are conveniently within walking distance from one another which makes it possible to catch more than one film each evening.

The Festival is presented by the UW-Madison Arts Institute and the UW Department of Communication Arts; additional sponsorship is provided by UW and community businesses and foundations.
Sink your teeth into a good book--an edible book, that is, with UW-Madison’s Annual Edible Book Festival! The festival, which is free and open to the public, will be held, Tuesday, April 10 from 4:30-6:30 PM (Memorial Library Commons, Room 460). As part of the fun, the libraries encourage all aspiring "food artists", (bakers and book enthusiasts) to participate by crafting their own edible books. An edible book is an entry made of edible materials, with the subject pertaining to books in shape or content. In the past, those participating have worked with cake, Jell-O, cheese, matzo and more.
If you are interested in contributing an "edible book", please complete and return the application form found on the festival page.
The deadline for submitting this application form is Monday, April 2, 2012.

Tales from Planet Earth is a week-long film festival featuring environmental films from around the world. From the fanciful to the profound, the films selected should engage audiences in thoughtful discussion of environmental issues and film media to capture and to examine those issues. The festival is a public outreach event from the Center for Culture, History, and Environment (CHE) and the Nelson Institute for Environmental Studies.
All festival events are free and open to the public as space/seating accommodates.

A preview sale, with $5.00 admission, will be held from 5:00 until 9:00 PM, Wednesday, October 19. The regular sale, which is open to all at no charge, will be held from 10:30 AM until 7:00 PM on Thursday and Friday, October 20-21.
On Saturday, October 22 (10:30 AM – 1:00 PM), you can bring a bag and fill it for $3.00.

The theme for the book festival this year is that of "voices" and how writers and their readers might share a discourse--both literal and literary.
Featured authors include: Diana Abu-Jaber, Dean Bakopoulos, Bonnie Jo Campbell, Jeffrey Eugenides, Myla Goldberg, and Parker Palmer, among many others.

Should you be in Madison during the Labor Day weekend, you may wish to take in the Dane County Farmers’ Market at the capitol square on Saturday morning then hang around for the annual Taste of Madison (which will start at 2:00PM, Saturday, and run through Sunday).

New this year for Wisconsin Welcome will be an ice-cream social event at Steenbock Library, September 9 (3:00-5:00 PM). While supplies last, Steenbock staff will be distributing an ice-cream sandwich (of rich, creamy Babcock Hall ice-cream).

As a bat enthusiast, I cannot help but encourage you to spread your wings at the Wisconsin Bat Festival, Saturday, April 16 (10:00 AM - 4:00 PM). The festival will feature opportunities to learn about different bat species from experts Rob Miles and Dave Redell, and enable you to discover, and contribute to, the essential conservation efforts being made worldwide. Hands-on projects include constructing your own backyard roost. The Wisconsin Bat Festival will be held at the Lussier Family Heritage Center, Lake Farm County Park (3011 Lake Farm Road, Madison). All proceeds will benefit the Wisconsin Bat Conservation Fund. Festival entrance fees are $8.00 per adult (16+); children free (with paying adult).

Check out the annual Madison ZineFest--a day devoted to selling, trading and sharing self-published works of art and literature. The Zine Fest will run from 11:00 AM until 6:00 PM in the Open Book Cafe. There will more than 40 exhibitors from across the country with samples of their zines. At 12:30, graphic novelist Barbara Slate will present the "Barbara Slate Workshop for Teens: You Can Do a Graphic Novel!" To register for the workshop, click here.

The 12th annual Food for Thought Festival, sponsored by the REAP Food Group, will celebrate healthy food traditions and the quest to eat pleasurably (of course!) and sustainably. During the Food for Thought Forum on Friday, special guest Ann Cooper (the Renegade Lunch Lady) will deliver a keynote address, "Lunch Lessons: Changing the Way We Feed Our Children" to be followed by a discussion panel with area school and food service professionals.
Saturday festival events will be held just off the Capitol Square on Martin Luther King Blvd. from 8:00 AM until 1:30 PM. Enjoy cooking demonstrations, information tables, tasty samples, activities and raffle prize opportunities. Ann Cooper will also appear in the Main Tent for a presentation and book-signing.
