Podcasts and Websites and Games, oh my!  Visit the 5th Annual Digital Salon exhibition to see these and more from our creative community of undergraduate and graduate students.

The week-long Digital Salon showcases the artistic and research-oriented projects that take digital form or rely heavily on digital technologies in the production process. The Salon is curated by a committee of UW-Madison faculty and staff.  Look for the "physical" exhibition at College Library, Open Book Café.  The virtual Salon can be accessed by visiting its site, here.  Previous exhibitions can be accessed

Cool Science Images Contest, 2014

Share your work or share your passionate interest in science by contributing an entry to the Why Files’ Cool Science Images contest.


The contest is open to currently-enrolled UW-Madison students, faculty and staff and can depict objects or phenomena from any discipline. 

Visit the site for details about how to enter (and to complete an entry form). Entries, which are judged on their "aesthetic and informational qualities", will be accepted from January 23 until the deadline date, February 28, 2014.

Winners will be announced mid-March and receive gift certificates, a large format print, and the honor of having their images posted to the Why Files site.

Curiosity Unleashed! WI Science Festival 2013

"Unleash your curiosity" with the Wisconsin Science Festival, September 26-29, 2013!

Visit the festival website program guide to plan your day.  While many events and programs will take place at the Wisconsin Institutes for Discovery, there are many other area venues including the Geology Museum, the Madison Children’s Museum and Union South that will be hosting special events. 
The festival affords an amazing opportunity to dabble creatively in the sciences with hands-on activities, demonstrations, exhibits, films, lectures, workshops, and more.  Importantly, too, you will meet the individuals behind the art and science who will share an infectious enthusiasm for what they do--whether that is their work in the lab, field or studio.  Ask plenty of questions!

And, do look for your campus librarians! They will be staffing an "Ask a Librarian/Ask a Science Librarian" table during the Discovery Expo (Town Center, WID).  What with our interest in the sciences and science literacy, how can we resist but to be there where the action is--we look forward to seeing you there!

Clothing, Culture & Context (Design Gallery)

Save the date for a special Design Gallery exhibition of selected materials from the Helen Louise Allen collection that explore the milieu of ethnicity, gender, religion and politics upon apparel design of the Indian subcontinent.  The complex interplay of design and identity is illuminated by selections of adult and children’s clothing, crafted artistically with metallic thread, delicate embroidery, and other embellishments of texture and fabric.
In addition to the selected apparel, the exhibition will include an online exhibit, videos and related programming.

Design Gallery events are free and open to the public.

Garden Expo (Feb 8-10)

Plant, tend and harvest with the annual Garden Expo! The Expo will be held at the Exhibition Hall of the Alliant Energy Center, February 8-10, 2013.  The Expo features exhibits, seminars and hands-on workshops for the gardener and landscaping enthusiast. Many of the presenters and hands-on consultants are staff with UW-Extension, Cooperative Extension.

Ticket prices, on-site, are $8.00 for a single day, $12.00 for two days and $17.00 for three days (advance ticket savings and a discount coupon are available from the Website). Admission proceeds support Wisconsin Public Television. See what’s new for 2013--including, again this year, the special Garden to Table dinner.

Factor Steenbock Library into your garden planning.  The library receives seed catalogs that can be found and browsed near the first floor vending area. Additionally, the library maintains an extensive collection of books about gardening, organic gardening, landscape design, composting, floriculture, and pest management, among other related topics.  Consult with library staff for assistance locating and using these collections.

Portfolio Showcase, UW Design Studies

Visit the Ruth Davis Design Gallery for this year’s annual Portfolio Showcase!

Each academic year, students in Textile and Apparel Design and Interior Design are invited to submit portfolios of their best work to faculty for review--a required process of these respective degree programs.

Examples from these portfolios, which may include sketches, garments, computer-drafting and installations, will be placed display in the gallery from December 7 until January 8.  A public reception will be held on Friday, December 7 (5:30-8:00 PM).

In keeping with this year’s Go Big Read selection, Radioactive: A Tale of Love and Fallout, Ebling Library has organized an exhibit featuring articles, books and various ephemera from its collections and those from other campus libraries and the Radiology Department that speak to the history of x-ray technology, the occupational hazards of working with radiation and radioactive materials, and the legacy of the Curie’s research.

An opening reception will be held on November 1 from 4:00 until 6:00 PM in the Historical Reading Room/Third Floor Gallery.  Rumor has it that something "glowing" will be served!

Call for Projects, 3rd Annual Digital Salon

UW Libraries and the Digital Humanities Initiative invite students (undergraduate and graduate) to submit their new media projects for exhibition during the 3rd annual Digital Salon, April 15-20, 2012.

The deadline for submitting a project will be Friday, March 5, 2012. Complete the online form to submit a project to the curatorial committee.

The Digital Salon seeks examples of artistic and research-oriented projects that take digital form or rely heavily on digital technologies in the production process. Examples of this work might include podcasts, experimental videos, animations, graphic novels or essays, websites, blogs, multimedia installations, posters, etc.

Additionally, undergraduate students who want to participate in the Undergraduate Symposium can elect to have their projects displayed at the Digital Salon Exhibition at the Symposium (in addition to the main Digital Salon exhibition in College Library's Open Book Cafe and online). The Undergraduate Symposium is Wednesday, April 18 at Union South. To do this, students should fill out an application to the Undergraduate Symposium and check the "Digital Salon" box on their application.

The Digital Salon is organized by the Digital Humanities Initiative and UW-Madison Libraries, with additional support from DesignLab.

Our Nations of Others

The Go Big Read program invites all UW-Madison students, staff, faculty, and Dane County residents to submit a creative piece in response to his/her reading of the book Enrique's Journey to compete in a juried exhibit, "Our Nations of Others." Submissions should be creative pieces in visual or literary forms. Pieces entered must be the artist/author’s original work on any topic related to Enrique’s Journey. (No video or audio works will be accepted). Participants may submit up to two visual or literary works.

Award winners will be honored in a ceremony with Enrique’s Journey photographer and Pulitzer Prize winner, Don Bartletti, in March 2012. A selection of works will also be featured in an exhibit during the spring 2012 semester.

Set Sail

Ebling Library plays host this semester to two complementary exhibitions, one featuring the allure of deep-ocean wilderness, the other, a history of maritime health and medicine.

"Beyond the Edge of the Sea", a traveling exhibit from the Muscarelle Museum of Art, features original watercolors that brilliantly capture the deep-ocean diversity observed by those who have descended in the Alvin Submersible.

"Seaworthy" examines a variety of topics in maritime health--from the use of horseshoe crabs to the diagnosis and treatments for scurvy, among other maladies. The materials that comprise this exhibit have been drawn from campus library collections.

A special reception with oceanographer, Dr. Cindy Lee Van Dover, artist, Karen Jacobsen and exhibits curator, Micaela Sullivan-Fowler will be held on Friday, November 11, 2011 (3:00-6:00 PM) in Ebling’s Third Floor Gallery.

Free and open to the public, these exhibitions will run until January 31, 2012 (inaugurated September 28, 2011) in the Historical Reading Room and Third Floor Gallery, Ebling Library (Health Sciences Learning Center).

The Yellow Wall-paper

A traveling exhibition from the National Library of Medicine, The Literature of Prescription: Charlotte Perkins Gilman and "The Yellow Wall-Paper" will occupy the lobby of Memorial Library until May 21, 2011. The exhibition examines how women’s entry into public and intellectual life had been restricted by theories, promulgated by medical professionals, of feminine weakness. Gilman’s short story, "The Yellow Wall-paper" (first published in 1892), remains a strong indictment of these particular medical and social conventions with a protagonist driven to madness by a prescribed "rest cure".

The exhibition has inspired several related exhibits in campus libraries.

Descriptions of related exhibits follow below:

The William B. Cairns Collection of American Women Writers 1650–1940, located in the Department of Special Collections, Memorial Library (9th Floor), boasts a number of works by Charlotte Perkins Gilman.

Steenbock Library has a small complementary book display featuring material from its collection on both domestic science in the nineteenth century and the history of wallpaper. The exhibit is available for viewing outside of Room 240 through May 21.

Ebling Library for the Health Sciences has a book selection in its 2nd floor study area displaying modern books on mental health issues in women, including some titles on postpartum depression. It also features a reprint of "The Yellow Wall-Paper" and a bibliography of the selected titles. Books on similar subjects from the nineteenth and early twentieth century are available by contacting Micaela Sullivan-Fowler. The display is at Ebling until May 21.

By Women, About Women: Stories in Fabric

There is still time to take in the exhibition, "By Women, About Women: Stories in Fabric" at the Kohler Art Library. This exhibition, organized by Isadora Gabrielle Leidenfrost (Ph.D candidate, Design Studies), brings together textiles and textile-inspired artists’ books from the Helen Louise Allen Textile Collection and the Kohler Art Library. The exhibition will remain in place until May 31, 2011.

Curator statement (from the Kohler exhibition page): "By Women, About Women" is a celebration of our identity, creativity, grace, and style. There are only a few creations in history that fulfill every human necessity and our need and love for fabric is so ubiquitous that we don't even realize that it is our greatest human invention. Textiles are as omnipresent as our stories; they are intrinsic to every society around the world, giving form to what we feel, do, and how we understand life. "By Women, About Women" is an exhibition that showcases the patterns of women's lives. Whether it is an example of women's fashion, a crazy quilt, a story about housework, or how women have put their "best figure forward," "By Women, About Women" evokes the nuances of women's lives, rumors, gossip, and old wives tales.

Know Thyself, Darwin Day 2011

Mark your calendar for UW-Madison’s 6th Annual Darwin Day(s), February 10-12, 2011.

This year, the Wisconsin Institutes for Discovery will play host to a series of lectures and science stations, free and open to the public, that explore the science of evolution. In conjunction with the Darwin Day events, the Wisconsin Union Play Circle Theater will also host a film and panel discussion on "Creation: The True Story of Charles Darwin."

The UW-Madison Darwin Day website supplies the schedule of events, speakers and themes, and a list of education resources.

Digital Salon, Submit Your Projects (Feb 4)

UW Libraries and the Digital Humanities Initiative invite students (undergraduate and graduate) to submit their new media projects for exhibition during the second annual Digital Salon, April 9-15, 2011.

The deadline for submitting a project will be Friday, February 4, 2011. Complete the online form to submit a project to the curatorial committee. Students, whose projects have been selected, will be contacted by February 21 with that confirmation.

The Digital Salon seeks examples of artistic and research-oriented projects that take digital form or rely heavily on digital technologies in the production process. Examples of this work might include podcasts, experimental videos, animations, graphic novels or essays, websites, blogs, multimedia installations, posters, etc.

In addition to the primary exhibition at College Library, projects will be displayed in an online exhibit with some additionally selected for inclusion in the Undergraduate Symposium and for display at the Wisconsin Institutes for Discovery. These events, and a reception for students participating in the Digital Salon, will also take place in mid-April.

Informing Consent, Exhibit

In conjunction with the Go Big Read selection, The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, Ebling Library has compiled an exhibit of texts, magazines, newspapers and photographs examining issues and ethics of human subject experimentation, tissue use, and policies to protect the rights of patients. Additionally, the exhibit lends insight into the world of Henrietta Lacks and the science of HeLa.

Materials for this exhibit have been drawn from campus collections in the University Archives, Ebling, Memorial and Steenbock Libraries and the W.M. Keck Laboratory for Biological Imaging.

Free and open to the public, this exhibit, "Informing Consent: Unwitting Subjects in Medicine's Pursuit of Beneficial Knowledge," will run until March 31, 2011 in the Historical Reading Room and Third Floor Gallery, Ebling Library (Health Sciences Learning Center).

A Cozy Shelter Yarn Bombing

The School of Human Ecology’s Design Gallery is sponsoring a "yarn bombing" of a bus shelter at the intersection of State and Johnson Streets.

This "cozy shelter" installation is slated to begin on September 30th and will be completed by October 1st, to coincide with the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art, Gallery Night. Members of Madison’s Knitters Guild have loaned their talents, in garter-stitched what-nots, to this installation, with yarn products distributed and collected by staff with the Sow’s Ear. This installation project has been coordinated by Professor Diane Sheehan and Lisa Frank, Interim Director of the Design Gallery.

Farms, Dogs and their People, Art Exhibit

Plan a visit to Ebling Library to take in the exhibit, "Farms, Dogs and their People," a collection of original oil paintings from Madison artist, Adrienne Applegate.

The exhibit will run from August 24 until October 4 in the Historical Reading Room and Third Floor Gallery of Ebling Library (in the Health Sciences Learning Center, 750 Highland Avenue).

An opening reception with the artist will take place on August 25 from 4:00-6:00 PM.

"Yarns" at Madison Public Library Central Branch

Jason Skoog, a library and information studies grad student at the UW-Madison, uses mixed media on paper to create colorful, imaginative worlds with open-ended narratives. 

The show features both small and large works populated by a variety of intriguing characters and objects like sailors, station wagons, gazelles, swimming pools, telephones, mop buckets, spiders, and rhinos. 

Please join Jason for an opening reception on Thursday, July 1st from 7-9pm at the Central Library.

"The Apron Show" - through Aug.6

The Center for Research on Gender and Women (1st floor of Ingraham Hall) will host an exhibition of altered and handmade aprons through August 6th, from 9-5 on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and from 8-1 on Wednesdays.
Organized by the Finlandia Young Women’s Caucus, the exhibit is intended to prompt viewers to reflect on their own personal history and memories associated with aprons – and the women in their lives who wore them.

The exhibition includes aprons made by individuals in Canada, England, and the United States.
