Spring Break, 2013

As library staff wish you a terrific spring break, be sure to check out the UHS site, "Do Spring Break Right" with tips on how to exercise a good time responsibly, no matter how far away you venture.

Campus libraries will be open during the break but with shorter hours. Confirm hours of operation by visiting the list of library locations and note the "Who’s Open" tab.

Stick it to the Flu!

Why risk becoming ill or passing an illness on to others?  Reduce your risk with a free, seasonal influenza vaccination.  From October 1 until November 16, students can visit University Health Services, Monday-Friday, (9:00 AM – 4:30 PM)--no appointment necessary--to receive the injection.  Students will be asked at the clinic (333 East Campus Mall, 6th floor) to present their UW-Madison student ID card.  The clinic also advises students to dress for the event, so-to-speak, with either a short-sleeve shirt or one with sleeves that will easily roll to the shoulder.

Additional walk-in clinics are available during the following dates around campus:
  • Friday, September 28:  The SERF (noon to 5:00 PM)
  • Monday, October 8:  Union South (9:00 AM to 2:00 PM)
  • Tuesday, October 9:  Chadbourne Hall (4:00 to 7:00 PM)

Influenza Updates (Campus) and Research

UW-Madison has supplied the campus community with an Influenza Information and Prevention site to provide news, information, self-care and prevention strategies.

Additionally, librarians with Ebling Health Sciences have produced a Swine Flu/2009-H1N1 Research Guide to provide quick access to information resources from the CDC, WHO, and the State of Wisconsin.

The guide also supplies links to consumer health information, international and foreign language resources, and additional sites with which to keep current on developing health events.

Swine Flu Resources

In light of recent outbreaks of the swine flu virus, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the World Health Organization (WHO) have issued respective information pages to track the virus and to supply the public with definitions, reports, press briefings, travel notices and practical tips for care.

Additionally, UW-Madison researchers and health service professionals continue to monitor disease reports and campus conditions, urging those who have recently traveled to areas where outbreaks have occurred to be alert for symptoms and to seek advice from their health-care providers, as need be.

Note: Ebling Library has also just posted information on its news blog.

Stress-Busters

Allow other people to make life a bit easier. Don't be afraid to ask for help.

Treat your body with respect and compassion. (Eat well; get some sleep!)

Accentuate the positive. It’s fine to acknowledge doubts, but always keep an image of success in your head. This focus can help bring out your best when needed most.

These are just a few of the tips listed on the “Healthy Ways to Handle Stress” page from University Health Services. Given that this is often a stressful time of the year for students and staff, UHS offers a variety of counseling opportunities and support services. Take a look at the links available from the Live Well pages. Additionally, you may find the Relaxation Exercises (MP3 audio) helpful.

Wishing you all the best for a successful end of term!

Travelers' Health

As someone who travels internationally, I often find it necessary to stay advised of any health concerns and/or recommended inoculations. For those of you similarly-inclined to do a little investigating, the following resources can be helpful for evaluating conditions and staying healthy at your destination.

Pet Therapy

Take a study break and romp with some friendly dogs on Library Mall, Wednesday, May 7 (from 3:00-5:00 PM). This annual “Pet Therapy” event, hosted by the Counseling Services unit of University Health Services, will also afford an opportunity to chat with counselors about any end-of-term stress and how to manage it.

According to Bob McGrath, Directory of Counseling Services at UHS, "Dogs don't care about grades and exams. They're just happy to see you." (as interviewed for campus news)
