Reading Between the Oscars

Slumdog Millionaire swept the Academy Awards, including the award for best picture. As compelling as audiences have found the film, did you know that its genesis was the novel Q & A by Vikas Swarup? In fact, many of the films represented by winning cast and crews have their roots in text—the following (below) to be found in campus library collections.

Use the MadCat catalog or speak with your favorite librarian to confirm availability. Should one these titles be checked-out to other library users, do consider a UW-System search or visit one of our area public libraries. Again, campus librarians are happy to help you find available copies.

Undergraduate Research Awards (Deadline: April 1)

College Library invites students to apply for its annual Undergraduate Research Awards. The awards celebrate excellence and creativity in using the library to complete an undergraduate research project.

(Examples may include a literature review for a lab study, the use of primary sources in a historical research paper, or the background research for a creative arts project).

Up to three Library Research Awards and one Research in Progress Award will be presented at the Undergraduate Symposium. (The Research in Progress Award is intended for projects that will not be completed before the award deadline).

Winners of Library Research Awards receive a cash prize of $300. The winner of the Research in Progress Award receives a cash prize of $150.

(Please note: The Financial Aid Office may need to modify your aid package if you were to receive outside aid, such as this cash prize).


Applications are due on April 1, 2009

How to Apply—the process:

  • Meet with a librarian or attend a drop-in information session to review and discuss your research.
  • Reflect on the various tools and strategies used to locate relevant materials.
  • Write a 600-800 word essay describing your research strategies and reflecting on your experience, noting the successes, difficulties, and surprises you encountered.
  • Submit an application, a statement of faculty support, a final version of your project, and the essay.

Go Big Read!

Is there a book that you would love to have others read—one that may appeal to a wide audience and generate interesting discussion? If so, then submit your recommendations to the “Go Big Read” committee. The deadline for making a book recommendation is March 6, 2009.

“Go Big Read” will be UW-Madison’s first common book program where students, staff and the community will be invited to read the same book then participate in a variety of related programs in-and-out of the classroom.

In the interest of building community, Chancellor Martin will welcome your participation during the fall semester 2009.

CALS Career Fair (February 19)

The CALS Spring Career & Internship Fair will be held on Thursday, February 19, from 3:00-7:00 PM in the Engineering Centers Building (atrium). Undergraduate and graduate students in agriculture, agribusiness, general sciences, food sciences, natural resources and applied social sciences should find this a good opportunity to visit with employers regarding career opportunities.

The CALS Career Services staff is available to assist students with finding career and internship opportunities and with preparing resumes and cover letters.

Tax Time

While campus libraries do not distribute pre-printed forms and instructions, the IRS Web site supplies most federal forms and guides required.

Similarly, the state of Wisconsin makes forms and instructions available online.

Federal and Wisconsin state tax forms can be picked up at Madison Public Library branches. Branch hours and locations.
