Employee Bus Pass, 2013-14

As may well be known, there are changes to how employees can obtain a bus pass for the 2013-2014 academic year.  Should you need to obtain your bus pass, do visit the Transportation Service’s Website, "Employee Bus Passes" page.

From there, you can log in with your NetID to submit your request and purchase your pass; the cost, this year for UW employees, will be $24.00.  The pass will be sent to you by mail/post.  Do note that there are some exceptions made for particular units whose administration/employer will yet supply a pass.  These exceptions are listed on the site.

Alternatively, Transportation Services will offer counter sales for the pass beginning September 16 from their campus offices.  Be prepared to present your Wiscard (campus ID).

Update (8/15)!  Over-the counter sales will now begin August 26!

ASM Bus Pass, Spring 2013

PLEASE NOTE: The Union South Lobby Box Office and the Student Activity Center are the pick-up sites for the ASM Student pass this spring semester 2013.

Distribution for the ASM spring pass began on Monday, January 14 at Union South and the Student Activity Center, (333 East Campus Mall, 4th Floor). With the first day of classes, January 22, and running through February 1, 2013, the hours of distribution will be from 10:00 AM until 6:00 PM at both locations.

After February 1, the StudentPrint office will be the only location from which to obtain a new or replacement bus pass. The StudentPrint office is located on the 3rd floor of the Student Activity Center. Visit its website to confirm hours of operation.

While most UW students qualify for an ASM Bus Pass, there are some conditions. See the ASM FAQ page to learn more. Do note that you must have a valid WisCard with you and be registered for spring semester classes before you can pick up your pass. If you have a brand new WisCard, you may need to wait overnight before your records are completely updated.

Steenbock Library is pleased to serve as one of the pick-up sites for the UW-Madison Employee Bus Pass. The bus pass remains subsidized yet this year, 2012-2013, by Transportation Services and UW Health. Eligible employees must present a valid UW Wiscard ID* or UW Hospital ID at one of the distribution locations in order to collect a bus pass.

Distribution for the 2012-2013 bus pass will take place between 10:00 AM and 6:00 PM at the following locations (do note dates):

• August 13 - 17: Memorial Library, West Corridor, Room 124
• August 20 - 24: Health Sciences Learning Center, Atrium
• August 27 - 31: Steenbock Library, Room 240
• September 4 - 7: WARF Building, Room 132

If an employee misses the initial distribution period for the complimentary bus pass, he/she can obtain one from Transportation Services after September 7, 2012.

* Faculty and staff who need a new or replacement ID card must present personal photo identification such as a driver's license, passport, or state ID to staff with the Wiscard Office, Union South. ASM Bus Pass for Spring 2012, Where to Go...

Construction Season Updates

A friend of mine recently observed that Wisconsin 'seems to exhibit two seasons, "winter" and "construction".' Stay up-to-date with campus construction and roadwork (particularly with closures and detours) with the projects page from Facilities Planning & Management. Additionally, Transportation Services maintains a list of projects with links to detour maps.

For status information about other city of Madison construction projects and roadwork, visit the City Transportation Department Website. This site will detail projects that are immediately impacting campus area corridors--University Avenue, Breese Terrace, Lake Street, and Highland Avenue, among others.

Bike to Work Week (June 6-10)

Collect your pass, weekdays January 10-14 (10:00AM - 5:00PM) and January 18-28 (10:00AM - 6:00PM) in Room 240 (across the room from the main entrance). The bus pass can also be picked up, during these dates, at the Student Activity Center (333 East Campus Mall).

Area Construction Update

A road and sidewalk project will commence this Saturday (July 17) and impact street and sidewalk access from the intersection of Babcock and Linden through to the Horse Barn (520 Elm Drive).

During this project, which is expected to be completed within 21 days (i.e. early August), the street will be closed to traffic save for pedestrian corridors along the north sidewalk, primarily.

Access to parking Lot 40 and to Babcock Hall (building) will be maintained. Signs will be posted in the vicinity to redirect those who approach the construction.

Bike to Work Week (June 6-11)

Do consider participating in this year’s "Commuter Bike Challenge". In order to participate, university departments and units can register online. Once a workplace is registered, the Bicycle Federation will send out additional information regarding participation, including logging one’s daily commute. See who has already signed up. Prizes and recognition will be granted to workplaces, not only for participating, but also for the following accomplishments:

• Highest number of participating employees
• Highest average number of days biked per participating employee
• Highest average number of miles biked per participating employee
• Most miles biked per workplace

Getting Here (Detours)

Now that the spring semester has come to a close and we are in the throes of high construction season, it will be important to note changes to street access and to campus bus routes, 80 and 85.

As recently reported by University Communications, and as of Monday, May 17 (through mid-August), Route 80 campus buses will travel W. Johnson to Lake Street, Lake to Langdon, and Langdon to North Park Street. Buses will collect passengers at the Route 85 stop in front of Memorial Union.

Both the 80 and 85 buses will travel south on Park to University Avenue, take University west to North Charter, turn right onto Charter, then left on Linden Drive. Riders can catch either bus at the University Avenue stops at Park and Mills streets.

The Route 85 bus will take Linden Drive to Babcock, Babcock to Observatory, and turn right. It will stop at the intersection with Charter Street then resume its regular recess route.

Both campus bus routes are observing recess hours. Plan your arrival by visiting the service charts for Bus 80 and Bus 85.

Commuter Solutions Week (April 19-23)

Care to spare yourself the frustration of driving and parking on campus? Or, would you like to explore the area’s existing network of bicycle and pedestrian routes? If so, then explore your alternatives this week with information tables, prize drawings, snacks, safety checks and tune-ups. UW Transportation staff and area partners will be on-hand from 11:30AM until 5:30PM at the following campus locations:

Monday, April 19: Library Mall

Tuesday, April 20: Engineering Hall (Main entrance)

Wed, April 21: Health Sciences Learning Center (Main entrance)

Thursday, April 22: Animal Sciences Building (Elm and Linden)

Friday, April 23: East Campus Mall (Between University & Johnson)

Additionally, Transportation Services will be hosting a series of open forums (beginning this week) to discuss the future of campus services. Your input is highly encouraged.

If you are not able to pick up your pass during this three week period, you will be able to pick one up from ASM StudentPrint Offices, beginning February 2, 2010. StudentPrint is located on the third floor of the Student Activity Center, 333 East Campus Mall.

Transit Tracker

If you are a bus commuter, it is nice to know when you can expect your bus to arrive--particularly during these very cold days (and with recess changes to campus routes). While you can view route schedules at the City of Madison Metro Transit site, real time arrivals can be tracked using its Transit Tracker—either with text-based arrival times or with live mapping.

Should service deviate due to special events or to severe weather, visit the Detours page for updates. You can also register to receive Rider Alerts to your preferred email account.

Ride the Drive (Sunday, August 30)

Grab your bike (walking shoes or rollerblades, too) and explore a bit of downtown Madison with this Sunday’s Ride the Drive event!

Ride the Drive will feature a car-free, six-mile loop (8:00am-2:00pm) from John Nolen Drive to East Washington, around the Capitol Square to State Street and back. As there will not be any particular start or stop, you will be able to join the fun at any location.

Live music, “comfort stations”, food venues and more will line the route.
