During the spring semester, the campus library system is piloting a new, self-service book scanning system. Three, public stations have been distributed to the libraries, one each to College, Memorial and Steenbock Libraries. Steenbock’s book-scanning station is located on its second floor (entrance level) and to the immediate right as one enters the building.

By means of an easy, step-by-step, touch-screen, one can scan the content from books (or other materials) to a variety of formats (PDF, searchable PDF, jpeg, text and Word) then save to flash drive or Google Docs, email, or print. The equipment includes flatbed and sheet-fed scanners capable of rendering images in color, grayscale and black/white. The printing feature (now only black/white) will communicate with the current "Go Print" release stations.

Free Voter IDs for Students

Don't miss an opportunity to exercise your right to vote! Given recent changes in state law that affect voter identification and registration, UW-Madison students who intend to vote and do not otherwise have Wisconsin state identification will be issued a free, supplemental ID for voting purposes. A student needing this card can obtain one from the Wiscard Office at Union South by presenting his/her Wiscard.

Do note that students who are Wisconsin residents and have a state-issued driver’s license, identification card, US passport, or US military ID will not require this supplemental identification and will be able to register and to vote using these other forms of identification.

ASM Bus Pass for Spring 2012, Where to Go...

PLEASE NOTE: Union South and the Student Activity Center are the pick-up sites for the ASM Student pass this spring semester 2012.

Distribution for the spring pass began on Tuesday, January 17 at Union South and the Student Activity Center, (333 East Campus Mall, 3rd Floor). With the first day of classes, January 23, and running through February 3, 2012, the hours of distribution will be from 10:00 AM until 6:00 PM at both locations.

After February 3, the StudentPrint office will be the only location from which to obtain a new or replacement bus pass. The StudentPrint office is located on the 3rd floor of the Student Activity Center. Hours of operation during the spring semester are from 9:30 AM until 6:30 PM.

While most UW students qualify for an ASM Bus Pass, there are some conditions. See the ASM FAQ page to learn more. Do note that you must have a valid WisCard with you and be registered for spring semester classes before you can pick up your pass. If you have a brand new WisCard, you may need to wait overnight before your records are completely updated.

10 Days of Career Services!

What should be the next Go Big Read?

The Go Big Read selection committee is now accepting your recommendations. Interim Chancellor David Ward has suggested that the next selection engage the theme of "innovation".

What have you read lately that evokes that theme? An ideal book for this program will possess the following qualities:

Be readable (relevant, engaging, and well-written)

Appeal to individuals with diverse backgrounds and experiences

Encompass sufficient depth and scope to generate discussions from different points of view

Be conducive to teaching and learning with opportunities for integration into academic programs

Lend itself to a variety of activities and programming (maybe even an author visit!)

The deadline for submitting a recommendation is Friday, February 3, 2012.

The Go Big Read Review Committee will sort through the nominations for the Chancellor’s sub-committee, which will then make the final selection.

Off-Campus Access & Winter Recess

As you enjoy your winter break, be sure to also satisfy your need for information with a visit to the Libraries’ Website.

Even when you’re off campus, simply select the resource you need to use from the site. Resources requiring authentication will prompt you to log in with your NetID. (In some instances, apart from NetID, you may still be asked to submit your University ID number and last name as login and password). Once you have entered either of these two pieces of identifying information, you will be able to use the resource as if you were here on campus.

Should you plan to visit campus, do note that the libraries will be open during the winter recess, but the hours will vary. Plan ahead and visit the list of library locations to see "Who’s Open".

Be sure to check the "Study Strong" pages for a list of extended library hours and finals week activities at the various campus libraries.

Steenbock Library will be extending its hours until 3:00 AM, beginning Friday, December 16, and running until Thursday, December 22, 2011.

Should you need to come and go from our building during these later hours, we always advise using the "buddy system" and to walk or share a ride with friends. Additionally, and as need be, do consider using SAFE Nighttime services.

In addition to some study break distractions to be found on the second floor near our entrance, the library will also host a generous donation from University Housing of coffee and hot chocolate during the evenings, (December 16-19; beginning at 7:00 PM, while supplies last). Look for the hot beverage service on the first floor (vending alcove).

Our Nations of Others

The Go Big Read program invites all UW-Madison students, staff, faculty, and Dane County residents to submit a creative piece in response to his/her reading of the book Enrique's Journey to compete in a juried exhibit, "Our Nations of Others." Submissions should be creative pieces in visual or literary forms. Pieces entered must be the artist/author’s original work on any topic related to Enrique’s Journey. (No video or audio works will be accepted). Participants may submit up to two visual or literary works.

Award winners will be honored in a ceremony with Enrique’s Journey photographer and Pulitzer Prize winner, Don Bartletti, in March 2012. A selection of works will also be featured in an exhibit during the spring 2012 semester.

Letters to Santa

Write a letter to Santa to benefit the Make-a-Wish Foundation! Daily, and until December 23rd, members from the UW Wishmakers organization will stop by its Steenbock letter-writing station to collect letters.
For each letter written, Macy’s department stores will donate $1.00 to the Make-a-Wish Foundation.

The Make-A-Wish Foundation grants the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions; the UW-Wishmakers is a student branch of this organization.

Creating DairyLand, Book Talk (Dec 5)

Learn how and why Wisconsin became a dairy state when Steenbock Library welcomes author Edward Janus for a special book presentation, December 5, 2011. In his new title, Creating DairyLand, Mr. Janus examines how the history of ideas and the reality of resource degradation would serve to transform the practice of agriculture in the state, or, in other words, show "how caring for cows saved our soil, created our landscape, brought prosperity to our state and still shapes our way of life in Wisconsin."

In addition to recounting this dairying revolution, the author shares stories and photos of contemporary practitioners--dairy farmers and cheese-makers. There will be time for questions.

Thanksgiving Holiday Hours, Campus Libraries

During this week of the Thanksgiving holiday, campus libraries will observe some changes from their regular hours of operation. Do plan ahead should you need to visit the libraries or to pick up items from their collections.
Steenbock Library hours are posted on its home page (lower right on screen) and on its detailed hours page. Hours of operation for all campus libraries can be found by browsing the list of libraries at the campus libraries' page.

Online resources, with the exception of chat and immediate email contact, will be available twenty-four hours, every day, and can be accessed from off-campus as well.

Now, through December 1, students and staff are invited to donate non-perishable food items on behalf of the "Share Your Holidays" end-hunger campaign. This effort, as coordinated by NBC 15, the campus Office of Visitor & Information Programs and campus partners, including University Housing and the General Library System, supplies necessary food items for the Second Harvest Foodbank of Southern Wisconsin.

Short Course Welcome 2011

Steenbock Library welcomes CALS Short Course students to campus. The Farm and Industry Short Course, founded in 1885, is a 17-week program of study designed to prepare its students for careers in agriculture.

The library with its collections, staff, and proximity to the residence halls is prepared to assist students with finding and using resources to complete class projects.

The library also supplies lab and group study spaces and access to recreational materials from the entire campus library system.

Office Book Delivery Service

Steenbock Library is piloting a new delivery service to offices of faculty and academic staff. Interested faculty and staff can request up to five books per day from the Steenbock collection exclusively. Books will be delivered using Interdepartmental mail.

For more information about this service and to access the online request form, click here. A request form received by 10:00 AM, Monday through Friday, will be processed that same day. Items should arrive to offices within three business days. An email message will be sent to confirm circulation status and anticipated delivery.

Speak with librarians or view the video tutorial on how to limit your library catalog searches to Steenbock collections.

Do note:

Only faculty and academic staff are eligible for office delivery.

Service is limited to books from the collections of Steenbock Library. (Books from other campus libraries and non-book material--journals, microfilm--cannot be delivered).

Only five items may be requested per day.

There is no return service; please return books to the most convenient campus library.

Each year on National Gaming Day @ Your Library, thousands of libraries across the county celebrate the educational, recreational, and social value of board and video games by hosting game-related events. Set Sail

Ebling Library plays host this semester to two complementary exhibitions, one featuring the allure of deep-ocean wilderness, the other, a history of maritime health and medicine.

"Beyond the Edge of the Sea", a traveling exhibit from the Muscarelle Museum of Art, features original watercolors that brilliantly capture the deep-ocean diversity observed by those who have descended in the Alvin Submersible.

"Seaworthy" examines a variety of topics in maritime health--from the use of horseshoe crabs to the diagnosis and treatments for scurvy, among other maladies. The materials that comprise this exhibit have been drawn from campus library collections.

A special reception with oceanographer, Dr. Cindy Lee Van Dover, artist, Karen Jacobsen and exhibits curator, Micaela Sullivan-Fowler will be held on Friday, November 11, 2011 (3:00-6:00 PM) in Ebling’s Third Floor Gallery.

Free and open to the public, these exhibitions will run until January 31, 2012 (inaugurated September 28, 2011) in the Historical Reading Room and Third Floor Gallery, Ebling Library (Health Sciences Learning Center).

Every fall, my grandparents would reserve a weekend for a "color tour" during which they would navigate their boat of an Oldsmobile along winding Midwestern roadways to marvel at the foliage. "October is golden" my grandfather would conclude, his favorite month and also my own.

Book Discussion Forums, GBR

As you read the Go Big Read selection, Enrique’s Journey, do plan to attend a book discussion forum. There are many discussion forums planned in a variety of venues, on campus and off, including one for Wednesday, October 26 at Steenbock Library. The Steenbock Library forum will begin at 7:00 PM in Room 340.

Discussion forums provide a great opportunity to wrangle with the issues raised by a book as those issues are examined by a community of readers who bring their knowledge, experience and reflections to the table. For students, insight drawn there can often make for a more satisfying reading experience and serve to help you with related class exercises. It can be enlightening to hear what others have been thinking.

Enjoy a meal and support Allen Centennial Gardens! Perkins Restaurant (5237 University Avenue) will donate 10% of all meal and bakery sales made between 3:00-8:00 PM on October 26 to the Allen Centennial Gardens. In addition to this contribution, the Olbrich Garden Club (which has organized this fundraiser) will supply matching funds.

The Allen Centennial Gardens comprise 2.5 acres of teaching gardens managed by staff affiliated with the University’s Department of Horticulture. The gardens feature a variety of landscaping designs and plant-communities--including experiments with culinary herb and kitchen gardens.

The gardens also afford volunteer and internship opportunities! Students and members of the public who are interested in contributing their time to a variety of gardening tasks are invited to contact Ed Lyon, Head Gardener, with that expressed interest and availability.

In conjunction with the Wisconsin Book Festival, the Friends of UW-Madison Libraries will host a used book sale, October 19-22, 2011 in Room 116 of Memorial Library.

A preview sale, with $5.00 admission, will be held from 5:00 until 9:00 PM, Wednesday, October 19. The regular sale, which is open to all at no charge, will be held from 10:30 AM until 7:00 PM on Thursday and Friday, October 20-21.

On Saturday, October 22 (10:30 AM – 1:00 PM), you can bring a bag and fill it for $3.00.

An Evening with Sonia Nazario, GBR (Oct 27)

Nazario's book, Enriques’s Journey, recounts the true story of a young boy who travels from Central America to North Carolina to reunite with his mother. In preparing to share Enrique’s story, the author spent years researching and traveling the treacherous route that many of these immigrants take to find work in the United States.

No tickets are required for this event; it is FREE and open to the public. Doors will open at 6:00 PM.

Save the date! Do you look for opportunities to feed the mind and to stir the soul? If so, consider sampling the bountiful harvest of author presentations and book discussion forums that comprise the annual, fall Wisconsin Book Festival.

The theme for the book festival this year is that of "voices" and how writers and their readers might share a discourse--both literal and literary.

Babcock Hall first opened for use in 1951 and was named for pioneering agricultural/dairy chemist and professor, Stephen Babcock. This additional library card will give you access to the public library system’s materials and resources which include its research databases, job and business resources, magazines, media, and popular reading collections--including an extensive collection of audiobooks and e-books.

While campus and public library systems are not set up for mutual book retrieval and return, there are many public branch libraries throughout the city to make for a convenient visit. Within its own network of libraries, resources can be delivered to the branch location nearest to you.

The public library system is a great way to extend your reach to library materials and to supplement that which you obtain from our campus system.

The UW Horticulture Society is hosting its annual indoor plant sale, September 23 - 25 at the Stock Pavilion. Society members will be selling a variety of houseplants including cacti, succulents, and orchids. Sale hours will run from 8:00 AM until 7:00 PM, Friday & Saturday, and from 9:00 AM until 5:00 PM (or until sold-out) on Sunday. Additional plant care supplies will also be available for purchase and include pots, saucers, soil, fertilizer, and watering tools. Proceeds from the plant sale fund society activities, travel (of horticultural interest), speakers and special programming for meetings.

Visit the Go Big Read, Events Calendar to find an interesting opportunity to discuss or experience various aspects of this year’s selection, Enrique’s Journey.

The calendar is also open to you (your class or organization) to announce a relevant event. In order to do so, you must have a current UW-Madison NetID and follow these steps:

1) Go to the Campus Events Calendar.

2) Click "Add an event" in the upper right corner.

3) Log in with your NetID and password.

4) Click "Add event" in the toolbar near the top of the screen.

5) Complete the "New event" form to add information about your event.

6) Use one or more Go Big Read tags to automatically feed your event to the Go Big Read Calendar. (For more information and a list of these tags, visit the How to Add Events page).

All event listings in the campus calendar are approved and/or edited by University Communications. Once an event has been approved, it should appear on the Go Big Read list of events. Approval usually takes only one business day.

Mindset List (Class of 2015)

Welcome to college, Class of 2015!

Beloit College has released its annual Mindset list. While it is important to note that this list does not wholly account for knowledge and experience, it does serve to capture a state of affairs--be it from popular culture, technology or political situation--within the lifespan of the traditional, incoming college student.

It certainly lends itself well to discussion and to reflection upon where we've been and where we may be heading.

Noteworthy on this year’s list is a statement in its introduction to what has become ubiquitous--that being that this is the "first generation to grow up taking the word "online" for granted and for whom crossing the digital divide has redefined research, original sources and access to information, changing the central experiences and methods in their lives."

At the libraries, of course, we, your campus librarians, are not strangers to how online resources have transformed how we find and manage information. Should you need assistance in finding and using these resources, please do not hesitate to contact us. We are happy to supply that assistance.

Employee Bus Pass Distribution

Steenbock Library is pleased to serve as one of the pick-up sites for the UW-Madison Employee Bus Pass. The bus pass from Transportation Services remains subsidized yet this year, 2011-2012. Eligible employees must present a valid UW Wiscard ID* or UW Hospital ID at one of the distribution locations in order to collect a bus pass.

Distribution of the 2011-2012 bus pass will take place between 10:00 AM and 6:00 PM at the following locations (do note dates):

August 15-19: Memorial Union, TITU (800 Langdon Street)

August 22-26: UW Hospital and Clinics, H4/1 Elevator Lobby

August 29-Sept 2: Steenbock Library, Room 240 (550 Babcock Drive)

September 6-9: WARF, Room 132 (614 Walnut Street)
(Do note that there will not be distribution on Monday, September 5, Labor Day)

If an employee misses the initial distribution period for the complimentary bus pass, he/she can obtain one from Transportation Services.

UW-Madison Day at the State Fair (Aug 10)

Come celebrate UW-Madison’s history of service and outreach by visiting its Wisconsin State Fair event, August 10. Located on the fair ground’s Central Mall, the "UW-Madison Day" will feature staff and alumni demonstrating their expertise and inviting fairgoers to "jump around" and experience all that the university has to offer--be that to taste some Babcock Ice Cream or to witness the Wonders of Physics.

Be sure to look for your Steenbock librarians and their campus library colleagues! We will be on hand to distribute some library-themed fun and to answer your questions about how you may visit and access library resources.

How has the University of Wisconsin touched your life? During the academic year 2011-2012, UW-Madison will celebrate the "Year of the Wisconsin Idea" and how the university, with this particular philosophy of collaboration, outreach and service, continues to enrich Wisconsin communities.

The seeds of the Wisconsin Idea were sown in 1904 when UW President Charles Van Hise declared that he would "never be content until the beneficent influence of the University reaches every home in the state."

In its early days, this philosophy served to forge relationships with state government and to inform legislation, but would evolve to speak more fully to the university’s commitment to public service, translating research into action.

A friend of mine recently observed that Wisconsin 'seems to exhibit two seasons, "winter" and "construction".' Stay up-to-date with campus construction and roadwork (particularly with closures and detours) with the projects page from Facilities Planning & Management. Additionally, Transportation Services maintains a list of projects with links to detour maps.

For status information about other city of Madison construction projects and roadwork, visit the City Transportation Department Website. This site will detail projects that are immediately impacting campus area corridors--University Avenue, Breese Terrace, Lake Street, and Highland Avenue, among others.

Get Help, Data Plans for NSF Proposals

Due to requirements announced in January, applicants submitting grant proposals to the National Science Foundation (NSF) must provide a two-page data management plan detailing the data collected in a project and how it will be managed, preserved, and shared.

If you need help determining: 1) what to include in your data management plan, 2) which data standards and formats are appropriate for your area, and/or 3) methods for documenting and sharing your data, Research Data Services can help. Color Your World, Allen Centennial Gardens

While you’re in our neighborhood, be sure to take a lunch or study break to soak in the color of the beautiful Allen Centennial Gardens, easily spotted through the library’s north-facing windows (corner of Babcock and Observatory Drives).

These 2.5 acres of teaching gardens, managed by staff affiliated with the university’s Department of Horticulture, surround what was formerly known as the 'Agricultural Dean’s residence.'

Today, the gardens feature a variety of landscaping designs and plant-communities--including experiments with culinary herb and kitchen gardens.

The gardens also afford volunteer and internship opportunities! Students and members of the public who are interested in contributing their time to a variety of gardening tasks are invited to contact Mr. Ed Lyon, Head Gardener, with that expressed interest and availability.

Enrique's Journey, the next Go Big Read

Chancellor Biddy Martin and a steering committee of campus staff have selected Sonia Nazario’s Enrique’s Journey as the 2011-2012 common book selection for the UW-Madison campus.

Enrique’s Journey recounts the true story of a young boy who travels from Central America to North Carolina to reunite with his mother. Merging of Collections; Closing of Biology Library

UW-Madison Libraries are planning for additional efficiencies in library services, resources, and operations in the face of the state budget situation. In order to respond to this situation, the Libraries are 'reorganizing staff and services, merging print collections, consolidating duplicate service points and assessing user needs,' according to General Library System Director, Ken Frazier.

One step is the integration of the Biology Library into Steenbock Library. Beginning with the end of the spring semester, the print collection (journals and books) will be transferred from the Biology Library to Steenbock.

Some of the rare history-of-science materials will be transferred to the Department of Special Collections, Memorial Library. Reserves services (print and electronic) will be absorbed by Steenbock Library.

Librarians Kathryn Maloney and Amanda Werhane will attend to providing support to the Departments of Botany and Zoology. Library services such as campus document delivery, reference and instruction, Interlibrary Loan, and access to the print collections will remain available during and after the merger.

The Libraries have also offered the expertise of its staff to assist the College of Letters and Science and the Departments of Botany and Zoology as they explore options for re-purposing the current Biology Library location.

The mission of UW Libraries remains unchanged, Frazier adds.

"We will continue to provide exemplary information services designed to support the teaching, learning, research, and outreach mission of UW-Madison," he says. "The efficiency measures being put in place will enable us to meet the needs of this great public research university."

Recycling and Donation Sites for Lakeshore Residents

The Division of University Housing, in partnership with Facilities Planning’ We Conserve, Goodwill, St. Vincent de Paul and Sergenians has named eight sites (four near the Lakeshore) where students can recycle certain products--such as metal and carpeting--and donate other, reusable items.

From May 6-14, the four Lakeshore recycling and donation sites are located at Cole Beach, Elizabeth Waters, Friedrick Hall and Tripp Circle.

The Yellow Wall-paper

A traveling exhibition from the National Library of Medicine, The Literature of Prescription: Charlotte Perkins Gilman and "The Yellow Wall-Paper" will occupy the lobby of Memorial Library until May 21, 2011. The exhibition examines how women’s entry into public and intellectual life had been restricted by theories, promulgated by medical professionals, of feminine weakness. Gilman’s short story, "The Yellow Wall-paper" (first published in 1892), remains a strong indictment of these particular medical and social conventions with a protagonist driven to madness by a prescribed "rest cure".

The exhibition has inspired several related exhibits in campus libraries.

Descriptions of related exhibits follow below:

The William B. Cairns Collection of American Women Writers 1650–1940, located in the Department of Special Collections, Memorial Library (9th Floor), boasts a number of works by Charlotte Perkins Gilman.

Steenbock Library has a small complementary book display featuring material from its collection on both domestic science in the nineteenth century and the history of wallpaper. The exhibit is available for viewing outside of Room 240 through May 21.

Ebling Library for the Health Sciences has a book selection in its 2nd floor study area displaying modern books on mental health issues in women, including some titles on postpartum depression. It also features a reprint of "The Yellow Wall-Paper" and a bibliography of the selected titles. Books on similar subjects from the nineteenth and early twentieth century are available by contacting Micaela Sullivan-Fowler. The display is at Ebling until May 21.

By Women, About Women: Stories in Fabric

There is still time to take in the exhibition, "By Women, About Women: Stories in Fabric" at the Kohler Art Library. This exhibition, organized by Isadora Gabrielle Leidenfrost (Ph.D candidate, Design Studies), brings together textiles and textile-inspired artists’ books from the Helen Louise Allen Textile Collection and the Kohler Art Library. The exhibition will remain in place until May 31, 2011.

Curator statement (from the Kohler exhibition page): "By Women, About Women" is a celebration of our identity, creativity, grace, and style. There are only a few creations in history that fulfill every human necessity and our need and love for fabric is so ubiquitous that we don't even realize that it is our greatest human invention. Textiles are as omnipresent as our stories; they are intrinsic to every society around the world, giving form to what we feel, do, and how we understand life. "By Women, About Women" is an exhibition that showcases the patterns of women's lives. Whether it is an example of women's fashion, a crazy quilt, a story about housework, or how women have put their "best figure forward," "By Women, About Women" evokes the nuances of women's lives, rumors, gossip, and old wives tales.

Earth Day Open House, FPL (April 22)

The Forest Products Lab (One Gifford Pinchot Drive) will host an open house for Earth Day, April 22 (9:00 AM – 2:00 PM). During this free, public event, visitors will enjoy an opportunity to visit with FPL researchers regarding efforts to conserve and make innovative use of forest products. Visitors can also tour the Centennial Research Facility and the Research Demonstration House where the research process informs building design, construction materials and energy use.

The lobby area of Building One will host an historical exhibit of FPL research.

Activities for children will feature demonstrations of termites and paper-making, among other activities, and visits with Smokey the Bear and Woodsy Owl.

As a bat enthusiast, I cannot help but encourage you to spread your wings at the Wisconsin Bat Festival, Saturday, April 16 (10:00 AM - 4:00 PM). The festival will feature opportunities to learn about different bat species from experts Rob Miles and Dave Redell, and enable you to discover, and contribute to, the essential conservation efforts being made worldwide. Hands-on projects include constructing your own backyard roost.

The Wisconsin Bat Festival will be held at the Lussier Family Heritage Center, Lake Farm County Park (3011 Lake Farm Road, Madison). See directions here.

All proceeds will benefit the Wisconsin Bat Conservation Fund. Festival entrance fees are $8.00 per adult (16+); children free (with paying adult).

Who Owns My Body, Capstone Event, GBR

Save the date for the 2010-2011 Go Big Read Capstone Event, Who Owns My Body and Where is it Now? April 15-16, 2011.

This free, two-day capstone event of discussions, lectures and films will explore questions surrounding the body as property, as well as the ways in which the current landscape has and hasn’t changed since the days of Henrietta Lacks. Friday highlights include a keynote lecture from Ruth Faden, Executive Director of the Johns Hopkins Berman Institute of Bioethics on the controversies raised in the Skloot book and a showing of "Made in India" to be followed by a moderated discussion.

On Saturday, panelists Alta Charo, Pilar Ossorio and Norm Fost will explore whether Henrietta Lacks and her cells would meet with the same fate in today's environment. Vanessa Northington Gamble, University Professor of Medical Humanities at George Washington University, will deliver a keynote lecture, "Henrietta Lacks Beyond Her Cells: Race, Racism, and American Medicine."

Science Expeditions 2011 (April 2)

Are you looking for something fun to do with friends and family this coming weekend? If so, then consider venturing out to Science Expeditions 2011 when UW-Madison hosts an exciting day of hands-on Exploration Stations and "Science Spectaculars"--special demonstrations and lectures.

All events are free and open to the public. This year, many of the events will be hosted at the Wisconsin Institutes for Discovery with free trolley shuttle to satellite locations.

This is a great way to check out campus science venues including the Geology Museum, the Botany Greenhouse and the Primate Center Learning Lobby, among others.

Edible Book Contest and Festival

Sink your teeth into a good book--an edible book, that is, with UW-Madison’s 4th Annual Edible Book Festival! The festival, which is free and open to the public, will be held, Tuesday, April 12 from 4:00-6:30 PM (Memorial Library, Room 460).

As part of the fun, the libraries encourage all aspiring food artists, (bakers and book enthusiasts) to participate by crafting their own edible books. An edible book is an entry made of edible materials, with the subject pertaining to books in shape or content. In the past, those participating have worked with cake, Jell-o, cheese, matzo and more. In addition to the Judges' Choice and People's Choice awards, prizes will be awarded in the following categories: best entry by a family, a group, a student, and an individual.

If you are interested in contributing an "edible book", please fill out and return the application form found on the festival page.

The deadline for submitting an application form is Monday, March 28; submit the form by email or mail to Kristina Glodoski.

Zotero Development Workshop (April 11)

Join Zotero community developer, Avram Lyon, to learn more about Translator Creation, Citation Style Language, the Zotero API, and using Zotero for your own scholarly endeavors.

Translators allow Zotero to detect and pull in citation information from web sites, including library catalogs, databases...you name it. The great thing is that if you create a new translator or make changes to an existing one, these updates can be bundled with subsequent Zotero releases to help others with their scholarly endeavors. You can also use the translators you create locally on your computer.

CSL is an XML language that allows you to create new citation and bibliographic styles. Many of the styles you know and use now within Zotero are created by community developers. If you need one that is not currently present in Zotero's CSL library, you can create your own - and this portion of the workshop will show you how to do that.

Mashups using Zotero's API and Leveraging Zotero for new scholarly endeavors, 3:00 - 4:30 PM

This session will show talk about manipulating parameters to feed various items and collections into other applications like Omeka, Wordpress, Googlereader, or one you create yourself! Some neat possibilities with Zotero include the crowdsourcing of transcription, metadata creation or the cleaning up of "bad" metadata as a group project.

A preview sale, with $5.00 admission, will be held from 5:00 until 9:00 PM, Wednesday, March 23. The regular sale, which is open to all at no charge, will be held from 10:30 AM until 7:00 PM on Thursday and Friday, March 24-25.

On Saturday, March 26 (10:30 AM – 2:00 PM), you can bring a bag and fill it for $3.00.
